Respect is long due for Corrections Use of Force Professionals...
By Robbie Cressman

Whenever you turn the channels on the T.V. or flip through the newest DVD releases you would be very hard pressed to find anyone of these to showcase the work and times of Corrections professionals.  The very reason for this is the reason why they are often under appreciated nor recognized for the work they do.

In my personal experience teach Security, front-line Law Enforcement, Tactical and Military professionals I find it hard to find many who constantly find themselves in the environment that Corrections professionals find themselves in.  These folks have to contend with 100% of the negative element 100% of the time.  Who else contends with this the to degree that they do and with the intensity and frequency that they must endure?  Hats off to you.

I learned a lesson some time back when it came to handcuffing from some I.C.I.T. professionals (SWAT Teams within the correctional system) with whom I have had the pleasure of training with.
Many view front-line Law Enforcement Officers as being the experts in handcuffing.  I now believe that they are not... and this is simply due to issues of frequency.  Law Enforcement Officers may put restraints on subjects a couple of times a shift (which can be a busy one in many geographical areas)
Corrections professionals are applying restraints to transport or contend with subjects scores of times a day.  Who else can match their day to day experiences in this arena.

The next time you see a Corrections professional remember that they are a lot more than a "glorified mall security guard".  Their work might now be considered that "sexy" in the media's eyes but they most certainly deserve our respect as should be seen as those who have to contend with a section of the population that even Law Enforcement only have to engage a portion of their time on duty.
